Using only a very light touch, Craniosacral therapy is an ideal modality for pre- and post- pregnancy. It elicits a deep parasympathetic response, decreasing tension in the pelvic and sacrum areas and bringing movement and response into the area for the mother and the developing baby. The deep calm experienced helps encourage a balanced nervous system, decreases cortisol, and helps the mother prepare for labor not only physically but also, mentally, emotionally and even spiritually.
Craniosacral therapy for pregnancy sessions focus on the bony pelvis, (the hip bones, sacrum, pubic bones and coccyx) along with abdominal organs, and uterus.
Importantly, the uterus is held in place by ligaments which can tighten and may become uncomfortable in pregnancy. Gentle craniosacral therapy is the go-to for releasing these supportive ligaments to allow for better posture and biomechanical function. We receive many referrals from midwives, obstetricians and birth doulas whose clients are feeling discomfort, and we find that craniosacral therapy is brilliant at easing this physical stress.
The slow and present way in which Craniosacral therapy is offered also invites awareness and physical connection to your body, encouraging understanding and real ‘knowing’ of your body on a felt level, as opposed to just learning from pictures and diagrams!
